It hasn’t been a dream season for Lazio, but they will, in all likelihood, compete in Europe next season. Continental challenges often require an additional quality, and the Italians have already started planning for the future.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Union Berlin wing-back Robin Gosens is on the cusp of penning a long-term contract at the Stadio Olimpico. Only a year after leaving Serie A to return to his homeland, the 29-year-old is close to re-embracing the comforts of Italy with Lazio.

Gosens, who starred for Germany at Euro 2020, failed to settle at Inter following his big-money move from Atalanta. As a result, they sold him to Union Berlin last summer. The attacking-minded full-back has done well in the Bundesliga, tallying six goals and four assists in 29 appearances.

However, with Gosens’ side on the precipice of relegation, Lazio have spotted an opportunity and could soon capitalize on it. Igor Tudor’s men would ideally sign the former Atalanta man on loan with an option to buy. But it’s more likely that it’ll be a mandatory clause set at around €12 million.

If everything goes smoothly, Gosens will become Tudor’s first signing at Lazio. The Croat’s interest in the left-footed star is unsurprising, given Biancocelesti’s struggles on the left, with Adam Marusic unable to shine as an inverted full-back.

Though Gosens is no longer the player he was at Atalanta, his resurgent campaign at Union Berlin can make Lazio fans optimistic. On the other hand, Luis Alberto’s stance on his future in the capital can’t. The illustrious playmaker remains hellbent on severing ties with the club
